How to Become a Comeback Kid
Many adult athletes can trace their sporting start to a younger, simpler time when life’s responsibilities had yet to compete and consume their schedule. Dominican-born triathlete Raquel Torres was one such promising young athlete whose athletic achievements would be sidelined in her prime by study, marriage, and raising a family. Sixteen years later, with great coaching and a supportive family, Tavares-Torres has become the ultimate comeback kid.

By Profesional Tri-athlete Raquel Torres
Swimming is not my favorite part of the triathlon. For me, triathlons “start” when I hear the click of my helmet. I love to bike and I love to go fast, but at this level, if you want to race like a pro (ITU races), you’ve got to draft with the pros. In other words, I need to get out of the water with the faster competitors because they are also the fast-moving cycling pack.
3 Disciplines, 3 Races, 5 Athletes, 5 Great Finishes!

TEAM OAM NOW/ATHLETIC MENTORS multi-sport team is a group of very talented, dedicated athletes who took on 3 early season triathlons with fantastic results. The great thing about triathlons is that they offer several options for multi-sport athletes. From sprint distance to full ironman, athletes can choose to participate in the triathlon (swim-bike-run), duathlon (run-bike-run), or even aquabike (swim-bike). Athletes can play to their strengths and preferences when choosing which distance and event in which to participate.
Raquel was born and raised in a small town called La Vega, in the center of Dominican Republic. She was very active as a kid, starting swim lessons at age of 3, and later doing some recreational MTB and triathlons. Here, she found her passion and represented the Dominican flag at the Junior Pan-American Championships in Costa Rica, and Mexico in 1997 & 1998, winning first place in both. At age 16 she participated as Elite during the first year that Triathlon was included in the Central American Games in 1998, finishing in 9th place.
